Laws and TOS "Terms of Service"

While it is not expressly against the law to re-sell your internet, its absolutely not against the law to share your WiFi connection with your guests. However, it is against most internet service providers "terms of service" or "acceptable use policy" to do the former on a residential connection. Cox has theirs for residential connections listed HERE. There are a thousand other internet service providers you can have in your area, but the majority of them have their TOS listed on their website or your initial sign up form.

Many internet service providers will also cater to business connections. As you can see in Cox's business policy HERE, they do make exceptions for businesses in the "Resale and Redistribution of Services" paragraph 6. That is to cater towards businesses like libraries and restaurants that offer free WiFi. In the smallest form of this operation that we're working towards, this should be the entry level service contract type for you to shoot for.  We will be dealing on the side of WiFi hot-spots, but as we grow this connection type can be phased out, or skipped altogether if you happen to be in the right circumstances.

Perfect circumstances would be to initially register or home or ideally your office location as an internet service provider. You can use Sandler Partners to fast track the process of running all the different connection types, carriers and wholesale bandwidth available in whatever area you ask them for. We've ran hundreds of locations across the entire USA through them and they've always been an incredible tool to use. They have the power to sniff out just about any kind of data connection in the area you could need or think of to want, and they get it for the best price they possibly can. It is probably possible to find the same deals Sandler Partners can find yourself, but if you're new to this or don't have the time to hunt all of that information down, I recommend you just use them to find your data connections.

To acquire a business internet connection or to register as an internet service provider may require a business license in your area. It was required in Las Vegas, the area we initially built the prototype of this project in. There is no "ISP" license, so its just the "TOS" we have to deal with, but a course in computer networking would help.

Our project will not be selling the internet directly but the ad space on our "captive portal" that the internet users will be subject to seeing every certain amount of hours. If you have ever been to a hotel or airport and used the WiFi, you have probably seen one of these. Ours will be a hundred times more user friendly and load most likely a hundred times faster.

What you need to know about advertising on the internet can be found HERE on the Federal Trade Commission's website. The majority of laws about advertising are mostly based around what the ad says, how it says it, who it says it to, etc etc. I encourage everyone to read and understand it if you plan to be in this field. We will show you later in the tutorial how to create your own ads while taking into consideration the internet marketing laws.

What you need to know about recieving and transmitting radio signals can be found HERE on the Broadcast Law. It's worth it to come up to date on the different definitions and lingo used in this environment. Broadcast Law goes over everything to frequencies allowed to be used, to how people can use their own property to recieve the singals already in their area. Knowing your rights is paramont to keep yourself out of any drama or trouble that could mean time wasted or less income earned.
